The short version
Ourside has no accounts and no server of its own. Everything you save in the app stays on your phone: the places you follow, your settings and your recent searches. We never receive them.
Two kinds of request do leave your phone. Apple’s map service is asked to name places and suggest towns, which means it sees where you are, the part of the map you are looking at, and what you type in the search field, or, if you manage a listing, the town or address you look up. And Sentry, a crash reporting service, is told when the app is opened and when it breaks, so we can fix it. Neither carries your name, and we never sell anything about you.
What we collect
The only information that reaches us, the people who make Ourside, comes from Sentry.
If Ourside crashes or hits an error, the app sends Sentry a crash report. It says what went wrong in the code and what the app did just before, and it gives technical details about the phone such as its model, its iOS version, its language and time zone, its screen, battery and memory, and the version of the app.
Each time you open Ourside, the app also tells Sentry that a session has started, and later whether it ended normally or in a crash. That is how we count how often the app breaks.
These can carry a random number that Sentry makes up on your phone, so reports from one phone can be counted as one. It is not your name, your phone number or your Apple Account, and deleting the app deletes it. A crash report does not carry your name, your location, the places you follow, or anything you searched for.
Like anything sent over the internet, a report arrives from an internet address, which can hint at roughly where you are. The app tells Sentry not to keep that address.
If we ever measure how the app is used, our rule is to collect the least that answers the question: counts, not histories. "Forty people nearby searched for raw milk" helps us; a record of who searched does not, so we will not keep one.
Some things we will not do at any stage: sell your information, show you ads, work with data brokers, follow your location when you are not using the app, or ask for more than we need. An account will take an email, not your phone number.
Your location
If you allow it, Ourside reads your location to show how far each place is from you and to point the map at where you are. Your location is never sent to us. Your most recent position is kept on the phone itself so the map can open where you left it.
You can refuse, and the app still works. Places then show their town instead of a distance, because a distance needs somewhere to measure from.
Apple’s map service is sent six kinds of request, and each one is made only so Apple can answer it.
Where you are, so Apple can name the state you are in and sellers from your state can come first.
The middle of the map, so Apple can name the area the map is showing. When the map is on you, that point is close to where you are.
The letters you type in the search field, with the part of the map you are looking at, so Apple can suggest places, towns, states and ZIP codes.
The suggestion you tap, so Apple can say where that place is.
If you manage a listing, the town you type for your delivery area, so Apple can find the middle of that town.
If you post a pop-up date and choose to show its address, the letters you type for that address, with the area around your listing, and then the address you tap, so Apple can suggest addresses and say where the one you chose is.
Apple handles these requests under its own privacy policy, and nothing about them reaches us.
What is saved on your phone
The farms you follow, your settings, your most recent location and the last state the app found you in, your last few searches, whether you have seen the note asking you to turn on location, and the height of one page at your text size so it opens at the right size. If you manage a listing, the changes and promotions you make to it are saved too. These are stored on the device only, and they do not move to a new phone.
Who else handles your information
Apple handles the map and the requests described under Your location, under Apple’s own privacy policy.
Sentry handles crash reports and session counts for us. Its terms with us let it use them only to provide and improve its service, require it to keep them confidential, and require it to protect them with technical and organizational security measures.
We share your information with no one else.
How long it is kept, and deleting it
What is saved on your phone stays there until you remove it. You can unfollow a place from its listing and clear your recent searches from the search field. Deleting the app removes everything it saved, including the random number Sentry uses.
Sentry keeps a crash report for 90 days at most, and after that it can no longer be read. Sentry does not publish how long it keeps session counts; we use them only as totals for each version of the app. A report carries no name or contact detail, so we have no way to find the reports from your phone.
Your choices
You can turn Ourside’s use of your location on or off at any time: open Settings, tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services, then Ourside. Never turns it off, and While Using the App turns it back on. Turned off, the app stops reading where you are.
Crash reports and session counts cannot be turned off inside the app. Deleting the app stops them.
Maps
The map is Apple Maps, and using it means Apple handles map data in the ordinary way described in Apple’s own privacy policy. We do not receive any of it.
Links out of the app
Calling a farm, opening its website, getting directions or sharing a listing hands you over to another app. What happens there is covered by that app’s terms, not ours.
Children
Ourside is not aimed at children. It collects nothing about anyone, of any age, beyond the crash reports and session counts described above, and none of it carries a name.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version appears here and the date at the top changes with it. We will not start collecting anything without saying so here first.
